What's in the box?

Just a little bit ago as I was sitting here at the dining table, a very loud chirp/squeak sound could be heard from outside the front door. Being familiar to distress animal sounds, out the door I went to investigate. There was Mr. Worm trying desperately to re-catch what he had caught. After some careful finagling, the 'prey' was tucked safely inside this box. Hmmmm, anyone care to guess what is in the box? No fair peeking!! :)
Out to the back pasture to release the 'prey' but Mike came up to investigate. All is very quiet.

Mr. Worm had caught a baby ground squirrel! Doing my best to check it over for wounds and coming to the conclusion it appeared to be okay other than being a bit stressed, it was time to release it. Wasn't just going to turn the little one loose in the pasture and let it fend for itself against the cats here. Heck, it had already been caught by one cat.

There are a couple of oak trees that belong to the ground squirrels here. So, being very careful, the box was lifted up to a huge crack in the trunk of the tree, tilted down and the next thing I knew out came the baby. If you look towards the bottom of the picture you can barely see the baby tail going across the crack. Bye bye little one. Take care.

Mike (grey donkey) and Mr. M. Mallow ( white one) coming over to see what's in the box. Sorry guys, all gone.

Until next time.......................

  4. How sweet. I have to say, I try to help my fat squirrels avoid being eaten by the dogs and cats. Doesn't help when they tease them though.

  5. The little one was surely happy to see you! Meeting cats face to face when you are his size? Not funny! Good luck little one and stay away from the felines!

  8. We sure do mess up the "food chain" don't we? ;o) I hate it when the dogs catch something, lucky so far with these, everything makes it back out there.

  9. I'm glad you were able to help the little thing. Without good, kind, humane folks such as yourself, this world would be a lot worse off than it is. I hope the little squirrel makes it. Ken and Mary of Fancy Fibers Farm
