Hmmmm, see something different about this horse? Yes, yes, he now has a halter on!

Yesterday evening when the neighbor got home from work. I met him at the fence, asked about his hands ( due to rope burns from the other night trying to catch the horse), saw that his hands are pretty chewed up, told him it was ok if his horse stayed another night. Then I asked him if it was okay with him if I worked with his horse and get a halter on him.

He said be my guest and good luck but not to feed him. Well, that's all I needed. My chance to prove that patience, calmness and talking quietly really does work!

This morning after feeding my herd, I took some hay up to Roy ( horses name). I had the halter with me, went into the arena without feeding him first, talked with him, rubbed the halter all over his face and shoulders, walked out, fed him and left him alone. I know, I know, he said not to feed him, but no animal goes hungry here, ever!

A few hours later I went back up with the halter, into the arena, rubbed the halter on him, had him follow me around, talked quietly then put the halter on him. Then I took it back off, walked away, he followed, and I put it back on him. No fuss, no muss. I rewarded him with a pat and a good job, then gave him a horse treat. He didn't know what a treat was and at first wasn't too sure about it, then decided he liked it.

Getting him haltered took about ten minutes. Hmmmm, don't suppose my method worked do ya'! Wait till the neighbor gets home tonight!!!!! Oh alright, I am grinning a bit because my way worked and his good ol' boy method didn't! :)

I may go up in a little while and try to untangle that mess of a mane he has.

Until next time................................

  2. Oh, please, when you see the neighbor's truck coming up his drive, run out there...I bet you could have that horse just following you around the arena when the neighbor comes over. "Oh, hi, just having a little chat with your boy here." :D

  3. I hope you teach your neighbor that kindness works. It saddens me that he's so mean to the horse.

  4. that is just too goood on your part!! He doesn't sound like anyone who should even own a horse!!! That is just too sad he even has this horse. As a horse owner, I have seen the type too many times, I also work with kindness, loyalty and treats....it works... ALWAYS!!

  5. Good for you! It just amazes me that people think that manhandling any animal is going to produce meaningful results.

I agree that you should be down at the arena, that Roy should have his halter on, and that you should be quietly working on his mane when your neighbor comes by to pick him up.

  6. Great Job! But why does he not want you to feed him? Is it if he gets hungry he will go home? lol

  9. What a shame he has to go back to your neighbor, makes me think there is a reason the horse wouldn't go near him. It saddens me how many people feel being violent and aggressive with a horse is acceptable. You clearly showed kindness and patience works, and the horse came to you because he didn't fear you.
I just hope your neighbor doesn't take it out on Roy when he gets him home

  10. Poor horse, he just wants to stay with you and not have to go home with the jerk (aka another name for burro) Geez - if he treats him like that when someone's watching, what does he do when someone's not! >:(

  11. What an awesome turn of events. It makes me feel sad, though, to know that pretty horse will have to go back to the "good ol' boy". ugh.

  13. That's the way! You go girl! All Roy wanted was a little attention not aggression. Animals know the good from the bad.Now he will probably not want to go home, or make a quick trip back as soon as the guy turns him loose.
