A Bat!!!!!!

Look what I found on the ground this morning. Yup, it's a bat.
Surprised the heck out of me when I saw this guy on the ground.

Nice set of teeth there.

He was a bit dried up so have no idea how long he had been laying on the ground. And definitely have no idea how he ended up dead. Doesn't appear to be any bite marks on him. Hmmm, not sure who to call to see if it was rabies that did him in. In the years I have lived here haven't seen a bat dead on the ground.

Until next time.....................

  1. County extension agent or maybe the health department could probably tell you. Very unusual and suspicious.

  2. Yes, you better call someone, like that's all you need, busy as you are. We have a lot of bats here and I've never seen a dead one either. But, I guess, bats do get old too, so it could be from natural causes. But check to be sure -- I take none of your cats came close?--Inger

  3. We've seen very few bats this year. Apparently there has been a virus that has been killing them off in quite large numbers--Maybe that's what did this one in...Or maybe it was the praying mantis from yesterday! :-)

  4. Bats....they do creep me out a little even though they are fascinating animals. Doesn't your local SPCA look after stuff like this? They do here.

  5. Your vet should be able to tell you who would do testing--when my llama killed a skunk, we took the skunk to the vet for a decapitation, and then my mom drove it to a the National Veterinary Labs for testing. Now, the llama has his annual rabies vaccination (I hadn't had him long enough to get around to doing that at the time).

  6. I'd call animal control first. And I wouldn't touch it without gloves.

  7. Poor little bat. You probably should have it tested, just in case. There are probably more around.

  8. Our area has the bat virus Kim mentioned. Caves are closed to hikers to try to keep the virus from spreading.

  9. Poor bat... I love bats. Years ago, I got a t-shirt that said: "Bats need friends, too!" The average bat eats 1,000 mosquitoes per night. They are such an important part of the ecosystem. There is a terrible virus going around that is killing all of the bats. It isn't contagious to other animals -- it just kills bats in huge numbers. It's wiped out millions of bats - particularly out East. In one of my publications (I think it was Defenders Of Wildlife), they talked about the issue extensively a few months ago. Yes, I would let your animal control / Fish & Game know about it, since they may be tracking dead bats in OR. And, they may want the body for testing. Keep us posted. It's a bummer for the poor little bat.
