Updates

For those of you who remember the neighbors dog, Persistence aka Little Dog, well, I haven't seen him in quite awhile. Nor have I heard him bark. Don't know if he is still next door, or just gone. Kind of sad because he really grew on me. Got used to him being around.
About six weeks ago, AJ, came down with laminitis. ( Inflammation of the hooves). I have had several horses come down with it over the years and have always been able to get it under control in a rather short period of time. But this time around it has been a battle. Soaking hay twice a day, keeping her stall almost knee deep in pine shavings, feeling for heat in her feet, etc.. It hasn't been until the last few days that finally there is progress. Whew, happy about that!

Little Inger has kept to her end of the bargain. She still only has the two eggs we agreed upon that she can hatch out. She hasn't laid or stole any eggs since our talk!

This morning as I was out in the playroom drinking coffee, watching the news and gearing up for the day I heard the neighbor lady hollering and yelling. Not knowing what was going on, outside I went to find out what the heck the commotion was. Well, their dog, the one who came onto my property and killed one of my hens, had gotten loose and attacked their goat! Her husband had coming running out of the house wrapped in a towel, grabbed the dog and made the comment that if he was dressed he would shoot the dog. Well, didn't hear a gunshot, goat is stressed and have no idea where the dog is.

Fire season has been push backed thanks to all the rain and cooler temps we have had as of late. As far as I'm concerned the hot weather can stay away for a lot longer. Fire season always scare me.
The Egyptian Geese babies and parents are doing great. Those babies are getting bigger and bigger with every passing day.
And I thought instead of responding to everyone's comments about Drama Queen middle daughter moving back in, that I want to say thank you to all of you for your comments. They really let me know that I am not the Evil parent I'm sure Drama Queen thinks I am! Kids!!!!

Two day update

It's been a couple of days since I wrote. Sorry, no pics in today's blog. Camera is either being temperamental or I need to buy more batteries!

So far there are still only the three baby chicks. Bonnie is sitting on the rest of the eggs while Little Inger is teaching the young ones how to eat and scratch and do chicken things.

The other hens are rather upset now since the door to the pen is closed all the time. Which means I have to keep a real close eye on them and open the door for them to go in and lay their wonderful, yummy eggs. Then back out to open the door to let them back out.

This afternoon Little Inger took the babies out of the house and into the enclosed area. It was so cute to watch them scratch the whole time they were peeping and Little Inger talking to them.

But, as I feared, the outside cats have noticed the peeping! Mr. Worm has been hanging around the pen with 'that look' in his eye. Even though I have talked to him that the babies are not for him to eat, for some odd silly reason he ignores me. Hmmmm, go figure! So, without him knowing it is me doing it, rocks are tossed at him to scare him away. He runs off with a very confused look in his face. But sure enough later on there he is hanging around the pen again.

Rose ( our 12 year old Boxer) is not feeling well today. I have a suspicion she may have had another small stroke. I have been sitting with her the better part of today which seems to make her feel better. The way I figure it is, whatever I can't get to today, will be waiting for me tomorrow to get done.

Speaking of dogs, in previous posts I talked about our neighbors Little Dog who is over here all the time. Over the past several days I haven't seen him. Now this is ridiculous on my part since he isn't even our dog, but I got worried. I went out and looked in the ditches along the road, walked the back pasture, looked in the barn, but couldn't find him. Well, maybe the neighbors are just keeping him home now. Okay, that's fine. Earlier this afternoon when I went out to get the mail, who was standing by the front door?! Yup, Persistence aka Little Dog! Now I feel better knowing he is okay.

Hopefully tomorrow the camera will be working and will post pics of the babies.

Persistence and the cats

I have no idea what got into Persistence this morning. Even though he is not my dog, he is over here all the time. This here is Goat. She is a pretty laid back kitty.
Persistence is trying with all his might to get Miss Kitty to play. He tries and tries to talk her into it.

He even shows her how much fun it will be.

Aw, come on. Play with me. Pleeeeeeze!!!

Play, play play!
Right after I took this pic, Miss Kitty had had enough and chased Persistence right into Goat, who in turn took off after Persistence chasing him straight into Stew Pot the rooster who chased him off back to me. Darn camera wasn't fast enough to catch all that.
Persistence then looks at me as if to say. " Um, all I wanted to do was play. What in the heck just happened there!"
So far I have not seen Persistence near any cat or chicken after what happened this morning.
The more that little dog is here the more I am really taking a liking to him!

A Helping Herd

This morning after coming back from feeding I noticed there was garbage scattered about in the back pasture. How wonderful! ( notice the sarcasm there?) It's been pouring which means that the garbage is soaking wet and not going to be fun picking up. Not that picking up garbage is in any way fun! So, off to the barn to get a grain bag and a muck fork. There is no way I am picking up somebody else's garbage even with gloves on. Nope, not going to happen.

It sure didn't take long for the herd to realize I had a familiar item in my hands. Before I knew it they all started making there way towards where I was.

Um, hate to tell ya' there Pewter but you don't want what is in there. I promise you! Turns out the garbage was bathroom garbage! Don't worry, no pictures of that.

Patti has to see what is in my hands before checking out the grain bag.

Hey Patti, bring that back! She started walking off with the bag. And look who is over here again! Yup, Little Dog or as I have been calling him now, Persistence. And guess who is responsible for the garbage mess? If you guessed Persistence, you are correct! I caught him coming over from our other neighbor with a piece of garbage from their place. Thanks DebH ( Dakotagoats) for the suggestion of the name Persistence. It fits!!!!

A.J. and Pattie still checking to make sure that there still isn't any grain in the bag.
It took awhile to get all the garbage, but even with the herds' 'help', the job is done.
Until next time......................

Someone's Being Broody!

For the past week I have noticed Little Inger wasn't coming out with the rest of the girlies. Everytime I went into the hen house Little Inger was in the same spot. Since I am new to chickens I became concerned. When I picked her up to see if maybe there was a wound or if she had 'poopy butt' she got really upset. When I set her back down she just flopped onto her side and stayed there which really scared me. Oh no, not Little Inger.

I called Rooster who is an employee up at my favorite feed store and told him what she was doing. He giggled and told me she was being 'broody'. She wants to sit on eggs and have babies! I asked him if it was okay to let her have babies in the winter. After all, it's so cold. Again he giggled and told me to let Mother Nature take her course. If Little Inger wants babies, to let her. So, guess what? Yup, Little Inger can sit on her eggs and if Mother Nature wants her to have babies, then it looks like their will babies.
And look. Little Dog was in our driveway today! Fine. So be it then. So long as he behaves himself he can stick around.
