Stew Pot and wacky weather

Stew Pot lives! I soaked and cleaned his leg twice yesterday, but after several failed attempts at wrapping it by myself I had to finally give in and ask for help. While I held him and talked to him his leg got wrapped. I'm not sure if it was my holding him and talking to him or if he was weak from blood loss ( yes he did lose a lot) or what, but he just snuggled against me while the bandage went on. There was an instant when he sort of went limp and closed his eyes. My first thought was he was dying and I started to get upset.

Nope, he wasn't dying. As soon as he was all doctored up I walked him over to his girls, set him down and he acted as if nothing had happened.
When I went out this morning to let the chickens out I immediately looked for him. Yup, there he was, the first out the door and looking as spry as ever.
Still don't know how he injured himself. All I know is that under his spur by his leg is where he was bleeding.

The flour I put on his wound yesterday sort of did the trick, but not to my liking. So I put some Wonder Dust on it. It doesn't say if it is good for chickens, but it's good for horses, dogs and donkeys! Well, obviously it didn't kill him so am guessing using it on chickens is okay!

Had to go to town today. Want to talk wacky weather! On the last stop in town I dropped my cell phone in a huge water puddle! And the battery and back popped off so yes, my phone got soaked. Right now it is sitting in a bowl of rice to dry out. We'll see if it works later! lol

Okay, so on the drive home, which takes about 45 minutes. First the sun was shining. Then it got windy. Then the clouds rolled in. Then it started raining. Then it started snowing. The closer I got to home, the weather started reversing from when I started. Stopped snowing. Stopped raining. Clouds went away. Closer to home there were blue skies.

Wow, talk about if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes! Ha Ha

Watching the clouds

We went out to the new house today to measure the pasture so we can start putting up a fence on the one end of the pasture that has no fence. And wouldn't you know it, the rain was downright pouring and the wind was a blowin'. After the measuring was done we headed back to the house to get out of the rain. While I was standing in the carport area I noticed what I thought was smoke coming from wood stoves. But realized that I wasn't watching wood smoke, it was clouds coming in and starting to form on the mountain across the road.
The clouds were coming in really fast.
As we stood there we could see the clouds swirling and changing and ever growing. It was rather awesome to see it happen right before our eyes.

While we were measuring we found a rather disturbing thing kind of hidden under some dead blackberry bushes. Want to know what it was? It was a carcass of a baby calf. Have no idea where it came from because as far as I know there haven't been any cows on the property in some time. But this carcass was fresh enough to know what it was. No, I didn't take any pictures of it!

Going back to the house again tomorrow to set off a bunch of bug bombs. While we were there we noticed just how many spiders were in the house. And since I do not do well with spiders, well, they have to go before I move in.

All at once

For once the weather forecast was right on! There were special weather statements throughout the valley concerning a nasty thunderstorm coming in. And that thunderstorm came in like a lion!

Wind picked up. Thunder way off and moving in quickly. Then the lightning started. Finally the rain came. Then it started hailing. At first it wasn't much. But holy smokes did it pick up!

The lights flickered several times. Internet on and off.

Outside animals a bit nervous at first. As I stood outside trying to capture lightning strikes I soon noticed the animals started to perk up. Then I noticed the horses seemed full of energy. Something I hadn't seen in quite awhile due to the excessive high temps that have just lingered and stalled here.

There they were running and bucking and rearing and snorting. You could just tell they felt good. Renewed. Refreshed. Cooled down!

Now of course the donkeys do not like to get wet. So every longear was either in the stall breezeway or under trees. But when it was all said and done, it was obvious they were feeling pretty good themselves.

This morning the air is so clean and fresh. All the animals just look refreshed. You can see it in their eyes. Even the chickens feel much better.

And with the cooler temps today I can finally tackle some much needed outside work. Even I feel more energetic than I have in a long time. Amazing what continued heat, day after day can do to ya'!

Oh, for those of you who are unable to see the video, it shows the rain coming down so fast and hard that the gutters on the house cannot keep up with it.

Until next time............

Busy Sunday

Yesterday, Sunday, was a busy day. Yesterday morning the well alarm went off saying that the water holding tank was almost empty. Great. That means water has to be delivered. Not a good sign for the summer months. I filled the underground tank with water from the above ground tank. Okay, good, now we have water.

So off to the grocery store to buy food. When I returned, the alarm had gone off again. Upon some investigating it was discovered that one of the donkeys had broke the water line next to the stalls. And the front pasture was, well, wet. So, that is where all the water was going!

Thank goodness a shut off valve was installed by the stalls to turn off the water there. Now that meant the horses and donkeys cannot go into the stalls at night since there is no water now. Okay, so everyone is now in both front and back pastures for awhile. Thank goodness the repairing of the pipe is easy.

As I mentioned before, summer is quickly arriving as you can see by the looks of the back pasture. The green is very sparse. The brown has taken over. And there is no irrigation here. Fire season will be in effect July 1st. Another reason I do not like summer. Too hot and wildfires.

Before much longer Chop is going to be hard to find in the pastures since she is going to blend in quite well!

A quick vent about grocery stores. I am one of those shoppers who pays attention to expiration dates. I started to get a bit ticked off after the fifth or sixth item checking the expiration date. I found too many items that were past the date. Of course I did not purchase those items, but it got me to thinking. Why should I have to check expiration dates at all! Isn't that part of the stores responsibility to make sure the expired items are pulled? I'm not talking about the items that still have a few days left on them, but the ones that are past the date. I mean come on, as a consumer, and one who doesn't like grocery shopping in the first place, I am spending more time in the store checking dates when I shouldn't have to. Oh, and one more thing. What in the world is going on with all the food recalls? Really, what is safe anymore unless you grow it yourself. Okay, I'll leave the food recall for another post. Because I have a lot to say about that!

Sheets of ICE!!!!!

Yesterday's weather sure affected what was waiting outside this morning! Sheets of ice everywhere. Picture the ice on the windshield out on the roads. Our road hasn't been this quiet in a very long time! It's very enjoyable too!

Ice and icicles!

All of our vehicles have sheets of ice as well as icicles. Heck, everything here does.

Due to it being so cold, gotta make sure the girls stay somewhat warm and that their waterer doesn't freeze.

Not sure if you can see the differant tracks in the ice. This was taken last night when I locked up the girlies and Stew Pot. To the left are my boot prints. Down the center are chicken tracks. And on the left are kitty paw prints. It looked exactly the same this morning when I went out to feed.

According to the weather report, more freezing rain predicted for today. Although I am leaning towards, "Not going to happen".

Until next time........................

Is it Snow? Or Freezing Rain? Hmmmm

Today has been an odd weather day. Clear skies this morning. The the clouds rolled in. Then it got dark. Then it started raining. Then hailing. Then snowing. And now freezing rain. Danni here is as confused as the rest of us are. Which is it going to be? Rain? Snow?
Yeah, everything is starting to turn white. But it really isn't snow. And it really isn't hail.

"Is it over with yet out there" asks Stew Pot.

This wacky weather had Little Inger confused so she kept 'talking' to me telling me she wanted 'up'. So I carried her around while I took some pics. All the while she is 'talking'. One of these days I am going to learn chicken language!
