Late yesterday afternoon we loaded up the Rubbermaid shed which I am going to use as the chicken coop at the new house. Since we needed to get to the new house while the sun was shining the shed was loaded up and off we went. Arrived at the new house, unloaded the shed and hurried back home. It was dark by the time we got back home.
Game plan was middle daughter to go lock up the chickens and I'd start dinner. As I was preparing something to eat middle daughter comes running into the house crying. In between sobs she tells me Little Inger, my favorite chicken, is dead. "What?" "Where?"
Sprinting out the door with a flashlight I ran to the chicken coop where middle daughter said that is where Little Inger is laying by the fence. Holding back tears I bent down to check her. Yup, she's just laying there caught in the fence. No movement.
As I reached to get her out of the fence and start talking to her, she lifts her little head and starts talking back!!! "What!" She's alive!!!!! After a few minutes of getting her wing and head out of the fence, I picked her up, held her close to my chest and she began telling me all about her ordeal. Somehow she managed to get out of the fenced in area and tried getting back in on the opposite side of the fence. That's when she got stuck. And since it was dark out, she played 'dead'.
After she and I both calmed down, I put her back inside the coop and told her she was going to get a stern talking to in the morning for scaring me like that!!
Our animal family sure know how to scare us!!!!
Until next time................................
I am glad for her that she was okay, she may have fallen asleep from exhaustion and frustration, the poor thing. How frightful for her!
ReplyDeleteOmg doesn't that just make your heart sink in an instant? Glad she is ok and only played dead....what will they think of next?
ReplyDeleteawww....brought tears to my eyes! I had a baby goat do that last year...she was my favorite and it seemed like slow motion in getting to her to see what happened...I was kicking myself in not checking earlier and how did this happen?? When I got to her she was just laying upside down dangling in a horrible stretch just waiting patiently for me to free her!! I totally thought she was dead! Stinker just shook it off and although a little gimpy went running to Momma for a quick snack. It never ceases to amaze me!! So glad Inger is OK!! :)
ReplyDeleteOh my, scary indeed! Glad little Inger is OK. One of our girls got her head stuck in the chicken wire fence when she was younger. I hate to think what would have happened had I not been right there to rescue her!
ReplyDeleteOh poor Inger, sternly tell her that she can get into all kinds of trouble on the other side of the fence and then give her a big kiss for me.
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm glad she's okay! What a scare! Poor baby.
ReplyDeleteOMG! Way to hang in there Little Inger!!
ReplyDeleteJust what you needed to get the adrenalin going!
Funny how they know what to do. We humans (or at least some of us) must have lost that ability through evolution.

Inger is very pretty. I hope she learned that wasn't a good thing to do.
ReplyDeleteOh, I am so happy little Inger is ok!! She is quite beautiful too. Scared me to death. I know how that feels and I am just happy your scare turned out ok :)

So glad she was just playing. I hate it when they scare us.
ReplyDeleteSo glad little Inger is safe! That can be so scary. Yes, they do scare us at times, don't they? I once had a good momma ewe come in for the evening without her lamb. Never a good sign. I went dashing out into the field, didn't see her anywhere, finally about halfway through the field I turned around and looked back. She was all snuggled up against the trunk of a dead tree--sound asleep. I went and grabbed her up (scared HER to death) and carried her home. Her momma came running when she saw I had her and seemed to swear 'she thought her baby was right behind her the whole time'. ;-) No wonder we all have grey hairs.

bloody hens!!!

Wow! That is one crazy story! Who says we can't communicate with animals?!? I think she was waiting patiently for her mom (you!) to come get her. Now you just have to figure out a way to 'ground' a chicken. Somehow, I don't think the grounding you did with your (human) kids will work, so be creative:)
ReplyDeleteor some chicken soup was in order...:-)
ReplyDeleteThank goodness Cindy! I stopped breathing until I got to the end of your post!
ReplyDeleteSo glad she's ok...when you care for wildlife..it doesn't matter what it is...it breaks your heart to see something happen to them.
ReplyDeleteI love your header..they look so loveable.
I understand how scared you must have been and I am soo glad she is OK. What a smart girl, playing dead like that.--Big Inger
