A Moment of Silence

Today is Memorial Day. A moment of silence and thanks to all the men and women who have or are serving in the military. Thank you.

Also a moment of silence for a blogging friendhttp://disasterfilm.blogspot.com/ whose beloved dog ( Maddie) passed away suddenly today.

Until next time...............

What the........!!!!!

As I was preparing to make dinner this evening I hear my youngest daughter calling Cookie's ( donkeys) name. Sounding pretty close, so, stopped what I was doing. Walked out of the kitchen towards the dining area, looked to the right and see..... this! Youngest daughter has the door wide open trying to coax Cookie inside the house!!
Youngest has been telling me for quite a few years that one of these days she is either going to bring her horse or a donkey into the house.

Youngest getting out of the way. Cookie making sure there is enough room.

Cookie rethinking about coming in. Youngest giving her a pep talk.

Cookie getting closer. Um, okay, that's far enough!

To answer your question, no, Cookie did not come into the house.

At least not this time!!!!
If I did walk in to see a horse or donkey inside the house, well, honestly, after I got through laughing, taking pics, the horse or donkey would be escorted right back outside.

Until next time..............

Poo and a Rant

What is it about poo and certain animals? The chickens love scratching through the horse and donkey poo. Especially after its been raining the past few days. Mmmmm, lots of yummy bugs to get.

And it isn't just the chickens who love horse and donkey poo. Honey Dog likes it too! You can hear Jeff Lewis crowing in the background. He is actually getting better at it with each passing day.

Now for my rant. The other day I was reading on the Internet that there is a group of people who want to ban Ronald McDonald ads/commercials because they say it is because of him is why our children are so overweight. Really? So parents want to blame a clown for making their kids overweight? How about this notion. How about not going to a fast food joint or if you do, make it a treat, not a daily food group. Why aren't parents taking the responsibility for their children's health? Why are parents pointing fingers at everybody else but themselves? How about saying, 'NO', when the kid begs and whines and throws a tantrum wanting to go to a fast food joint for a toy?

Okay, that was my rant.

Until next time......................

Cleaning, Trimming,Searching,Found

Yesterday Joe, my farrier, came out to trim the donkeys. He is the best farrier around. I always enjoy it when he comes out. He has lots of stories to share. After trimming the donkeys, he took a look at AJ's feet. Yup, sure enough there is a considerable amount of growth from when he was here about a month ago. That's a good thing!
Here are the two front feet trimmings. For only four weeks, this is a lot of growth. So far it looks like the laminitis hasn't effected her feet too terribly. Everything is still holding together.

After Joe's visit, and the rest of the outside chores were done, it was time to continue my cleaning spree. After cleaning out the fridge there were dishes that needed to be loaded into the dishwasher. I left the dishwasher door open. Can you guess whose head was inside cleaning the dirty dishes for me? Yup, Honey Dog. Thanks, Honey Dog, but I prefer the dishes to be washed in hot water, not dog slobber.

For awhile now I have been trying to figure out who is a hen and who is a roo from the ten chicks hatched a few months ago. So far there are three roosters. Jeff Lewis ( pic above), a White Silky and a Barred Rock cross. The other ones I just haven't been able to distinguish whether they are a hen or roo. Well, thanks to Jeff Lewis, he is helping me narrow it down to who is a hen! Good boy Jeff Lewis!! Looks like there are more hens than roosters. Yay!!

The past several days there have only been one to two eggs in the chicken house. Hmmm, what the heck! Now I know the girls are laying on a daily basis so there should be more eggs than that. Well, sure enough, some of the girls have found a new place to lay. They have decided that in between the hay bales in the barn is a mighty fine place to lay. Now instead of collecting eggs from the chicken house, it has turned into a hunt and search in the hay barn. The egg pic above was taken awhile ago from inside the chicken house.

A few days ago my oldest daughter mentioned to me that I have a 'Farmers Tan' going on and need to start wearing summer shirts. I would take a pic of my arms, but honestly, you don't want to see them!!

Oh, the neighbors dog who attacked his goat hasn't been seen or heard since it happened. Hmmm, have a feeling he doesn't have that dog anymore!

Until next time.....................

Updates

For those of you who remember the neighbors dog, Persistence aka Little Dog, well, I haven't seen him in quite awhile. Nor have I heard him bark. Don't know if he is still next door, or just gone. Kind of sad because he really grew on me. Got used to him being around.
About six weeks ago, AJ, came down with laminitis. ( Inflammation of the hooves). I have had several horses come down with it over the years and have always been able to get it under control in a rather short period of time. But this time around it has been a battle. Soaking hay twice a day, keeping her stall almost knee deep in pine shavings, feeling for heat in her feet, etc.. It hasn't been until the last few days that finally there is progress. Whew, happy about that!

Little Inger has kept to her end of the bargain. She still only has the two eggs we agreed upon that she can hatch out. She hasn't laid or stole any eggs since our talk!

This morning as I was out in the playroom drinking coffee, watching the news and gearing up for the day I heard the neighbor lady hollering and yelling. Not knowing what was going on, outside I went to find out what the heck the commotion was. Well, their dog, the one who came onto my property and killed one of my hens, had gotten loose and attacked their goat! Her husband had coming running out of the house wrapped in a towel, grabbed the dog and made the comment that if he was dressed he would shoot the dog. Well, didn't hear a gunshot, goat is stressed and have no idea where the dog is.

Fire season has been push backed thanks to all the rain and cooler temps we have had as of late. As far as I'm concerned the hot weather can stay away for a lot longer. Fire season always scare me.
The Egyptian Geese babies and parents are doing great. Those babies are getting bigger and bigger with every passing day.
And I thought instead of responding to everyone's comments about Drama Queen middle daughter moving back in, that I want to say thank you to all of you for your comments. They really let me know that I am not the Evil parent I'm sure Drama Queen thinks I am! Kids!!!!

Kids! The human ones!

Kids, no matter how old or young they are, do try a parents patience from time to time.

A few days ago my middle daughter calls me all upset. Her boyfriend and her are arguing and she wants to come home. Really? This is the third time they have broken up. And this would be the third time she asked to come back home. Yes, she moved back home twice before only to go back to him. All in all he isn't a bad guy. Just needs to grow up and grow a set!
As a parent you want to protect your kids. But on the other hand, they do have to learn what life is all about. And it can be a pain in the butt! No one said life is all fun and full of happy, happy every waking moment.

After pondering a bit, I resigned and said yes. But this is the last time. And there are rules to be followed without question. She agrees. So home she comes. Ugh!

My middle daughter is quite the drama queen. Over the top drama! And honestly, I don't have the strength or patience to deal with it. My philosophy has always been to 'Buck the 'F' up' no matter what is dealt you in life. So I 'Bucked the "F' up'.

I lay down the rules. She agrees to them, only to have forgotten them within minutes! No problem, that is what pen and paper are for! Can't forget them when they are in your face.

My youngest still lives at home while she is attending college. And she is not very happy with her sister moving back in. Like me, she does not like all the drama the middle daughter is about. Oh man, more tension. Just what I need! As if there isn't enough to deal with on a daily basis!

Oldest daughter and youngest daughter are very goal orientated, independent, strong, good head on their shoulders girls. Well, adults. Middle daughter likes living her life one day at a time with no goals, easiest path available with use of as little energy as can possibly be used, and well, other attributes that I do not know where she learned them from nor do I agree with.

There are times like these that finding a good hiding place is a great idea!

With any luck, middle daughter will either get her act together and grow up ( she is 27), or she will have to live in her own drama world, but somewhere else!

I am too darned old, paid my dues, raised my kids, busted my behind, and yes, I am being a tad selfish. This is my time now!

Thanks for listening to my rant and rave. It is much appreciated.

Until next time....................

Chickens

This is my egg collecting basket. I have always wanted one and my oldest daughter surprised me with this one. I use it everyday to collect the eggs.
Thank goodness its big enough to hold the average three eggs a day the girls gift me! :) Maybe one day there will be enough eggs to actually fill the bottom!!

Guess what? Little Inger has been broody for awhile now. But with already having ten younger chickens thanks to her and Bonnie hatching them, well, I wasn't ready for more babies. So I have been taking her daily egg for a few weeks now.

Yesterday afternoon I picked up Little Inger to get her egg. To my surprise she had two eggs under her. As I was holding her she started 'talking' to me. But this time it was a different kind of 'talk'. It was actually a pleading kind of pathetic 'talk'. As I continued to hold her and listen to what she was saying, I finally told her that she could have these two eggs. Her 'pleading' talk touched my heart, so how can I deny her what she wants. So, I put an 'x' on each egg with a pencil so when there are more eggs under her, I can take the unmarked ones.

This morning as I was coming back from filling the pasture water troughs I see this scene. Eva is bathing in the dirt, Danni is waiting her turn next and one of the Houdans is next in line. Um, girls, this isn't like it is the only dirt hole available!

I have left these weeds alone so it gives cover for the chickens when the hawks are around.

Then I look over and see this picture. Stew Pot perched on the ax handle! Good thing that ax is not used for 'doing' chickens in. It is used to chop wood and that's it.

Jabacue's blog http://jabacue.blogspot.com/ had a picture of a head of a lion on a tree ( yard deco). Well, that reminded me of a yard deco piece I put on the barn wall. I just like the look on this suns face. Makes me smile everytime.

Until next time..............

Just misc stuff

I have been collecting sand from all over the world for quite a few years. It all started when my best friend went on her honeymoon to Hawaii. She asked me what I would like for her to bring back and I said a bottle of sand. Sand? Yes, sand. Why? Well, it's free and sand has its own color and texture from where it came from.
I don't travel very much and never have been out of the country. I have sand from France to Israel to Germany to Mexico and quite a bit from all over the United States. All thanks to friends. It really is amazing to see the different colors. There are still a few places I don't have sand from. Maybe one of these days it will get added to my collection. Pssss, don't look at all the dust on the shelves. Haven't gotten around to pulling everything out of the case and cleaning.

Cookie, Doughnut and Arnold wanting out of the front pasture and into the yard. Sorry guys, not today. It is suppose to start raining later on. And if you know donkeys, they despise to get wet! Snow is okay, but for some reason they ( at least the ones here) detest water.

The one and only Iris finally bloomed.

And there are bird nests in the breezeway where the stalls are. Yes, there are tiny babies in them. Only reason I know is I heard them!

Last night I watched an old 1957 Joan Crawford movie I hadn't seen before. It was called The story of Esther Costelle. Well, wasn't impressed at all. It was like watching a remake of Helen Keller which wasn't done very well. I fell asleep before the ending. I really do like watching the old black and white movies. Although I get kidded about it a lot.
And yes, I am still going through stuff which explains why I haven't posted in a few days. No, no good treasures this time. Next stop is out to the barn!!

Until next time..................
