For those of you who have never had a donkey in your life, please allow me to say that they are incredible animals. Very intelligent. Loving. Comical. Some are more vocal than others. Each has their own distinct bray. They are fantastic guardians. They are watchers. They watch everything. And you can bet if one of these beautiful animals is watching something and turns tail and runs in the opposite direction, I'm headed in the same direction! Sadly donkeys are one of the most abused and neglected due to the fact that a lot of people think they are dumb and stubborn and worthless. Well, all I can say is I cannot imagine my life without them in it. I took these pictures this afternoon and my first thought was donkeys, donkeys, everywhere. Hope you enjoy.
I love the pics, they are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteMike is the prettiest in the group. Love the group picture at the gate.
ReplyDeleteThey look very peaceful and content. I've never been owned by a donkey, but who knows what'll show up at my door next. ;-) Had to laugh at your comment--donkeys, donkeys every where....I think the same thing here, only it's cats, cats....
ReplyDeleteTammy
Look at everybody enjoying the sun - they really love warming their bodies and napping in the sun!
ReplyDeleteI don't see Mike...is he in there somewhere?
I can imagine my life without donkeys and it's NO fun...I hope to never be that way again! :-) I've been bitten by the same donkey bug as you, that's for sure!! :-)
I've hankered to add a donkey to my "guardian" posse on our farm. We have 3 pyr crosses already on the job. Something about donkeys reassure me. I just love to hear them bray and I've both heard and read they're heck-on-wheels against predators. Unfortunately, I haven't yet convinced my DW of this. She thinks they'll be too much trouble to look after to be worth their keep and she's deathly afraid that they'll hurt our goats/sheep/alpacas (she's heard horror stories of rampaging, mean donkeys). Anyway, I much enjoyed the great pics. Ken and Mary Berry of FancyFibers Farm.
ReplyDeleteMike's bottom is showing but Cindy knows he is my favorite. Heck, Mike even sent me a picture of himself for a Christmas present!
ReplyDeleteAmanda--Thank you
ReplyDeleteTammy-- Hopefully a wonderful longear will come into your life and then you can see for yourself just what amazing animals they are. Funny comment about the cats. lol
Danni--You sure have been bitten by the donkey bug! You love them as much as I. Mike is still here.He is in the group shot with his butt towards the fence.
Ken and Mary-- All of the donkeys that are here get along beautifully with the goats. I will say that there have been two ( who have since been placed in forever homes) that chased the goats. They didn't hurt them, just chased them. And you are right about them being heck on wheels after a predator. In fact, just this morning the donkeys chased two of my neighbors dogs right out of the pasture. Talk about two dogs tucking tail and running for their life! They barely made it! Before donkeys came into my life, I had heard the same horror stories. 99% of those stories are false! Taking care of a donkey is no more than taking care of a goat or a llama. If a donkey should ever come into your life, believe me, you and your wife will fall head over heels in love!
2CF ( Sis)-- Mike says hello and is happy you liked the picture of him. He is such a good boy. Oh wait, you already know that.
I agree with you -- there are no other animals that even come close. I had never met a donkey up close before I worked at the rescue, but it didn't take me long to fall in love with them. If I were younger, I would have two of them right here and I know they would be my best friends forever.
ReplyDeleteI can certainly tell that your little farm does have a big heart, just by the way you talk of your donkeys! I'm going to keep up my campaign with my DW to find our own forever donkeys. A lady nearby who runs a shelter for LGDs and donkeys (she has a bunch of both) I'm sure will work with us (we've had 2 of our LGDs "trained" by her older dogs and we adopted one of her dogs, who's the best). Now that you mention it, at our friend Astrid's farm, we saw one of her donkeys tear out after a couple of LGDs whom they weren't familiar with. It was quite a sight to behold. I invite you to visit us by taking a peek at my DW's website
ReplyDeleteWOW, that is so nice to see, I love donkeys and started recently volunteering at a Donkey Sanctuary in Canada, you are so right, they are truly amazing creatures, so smart, loving and just so much fun to be around.
ReplyDeleteThis is my first visit to your blog and I love your life! I've been bitten by the donkey bug, but have to wait until we get permanently moved to our piece of paradise in the mountains. Until then, I will live vicariously through folks like you and Danni.
