Tails of Adulthood

My goodness these past few days have been busy! Without boring you with it all, I thought I would share a thought with you. This morning I was moving slow. No real reason other than I just couldn't get motivated. With so much to do today I suppose I was already tired at just the thought of it.
After a few cups of coffee and a shower, then out to feed everyone, eating something sounded good. However, just didn't know what sounded good.

As I rummaged around looking for something to eat I ended up grabbing a bag of chips and a container of dip.

As I was standing there eating chips and dip and looking out the kitchen window, just appreciating what a glorious day it was looking like, it dawned on me that I like being an adult!

My kids are all grown. Don't have to cook breakfast and get them ready for the day.

I realized that as an adult I can eat whatever I want, whenever I want. If I want ice cream ( which I don't really care for), then I can have ice cream instead of dinner.

As I stood there watching the donkeys in the front pasture munching away and me eating chips and dip, I remembered when I was a kid and always being told what to do. What to eat. What to wear. Etc.....

Don't get me wrong, I have known for a very long time I am an adult and can do what I want. But for some reason standing there eating chips and dip this morning, it really hit me. No kids to take care of and I can eat what I want.

Yup, I like being an adult. Oh sure, it has its drawbacks. Skin getting drier and more wrinkled. Eyebrows getting longer. A long hair on the chin every now and then. More aches and pains. Hair graying ( in my case a lot!). Hard body days long, long gone. You get the picture.
Yup, being an adult is great. You have found and kept close to your heart real, true friends. You know the ones I mean. The ones you can call or show up on their doorstep anytime day or night and they are there with open arms and big smiles.
Yup, being an adult is great. Your younger years had such lessons of life to learn.
Yup, being an adult is great. You can eat what you want when you want.
Smile. Enjoy your day.
Until next time........................

Little bit of this n that........and the answer

It is rainy and windy here today so am going to treat myself to kind of a day off. It feels like a good day to catch up on some reading. But before I settle in it is post time.

Just odd bits of this n that for today.

Do you have a 'strawberry' in your house? My best friend refers to a 'strawberry' as a piece of decoration in your house that just doesn't really belong with the rest of the house. Here is my sort of 'strawberry'. I saw this armadillo in a shop some years ago and for some reason fell in love with it. He really does fit into the western/horse theme here, but stands out because well, he is an armadillo. Yeah, I know he is cheezy! Ha Ha
Have you ever gotten into your vehicle or in close quarters somewhere and smell a funky smell? But you just can't figure out where that smell is coming from! It takes awhile, then you realize its you. Well, not you per say, but say like a......barn jacket that is in serious need of a trip to the washing machine! Yup, this is my smelly barn jacket that is being washed as I speak. Didn't realize it was that funkified until I drove up to the feed store and kept smelling a 'smell'. Pretty bad huh? :)

The answer to yesterdays post is a Ground Squirrel. Sorry, this is no prize to be won other than a pat on the back for playing the sound game.

And speaking of sounds. I have been trying for a long time now to capture Mike the donkeys bray on video. His is one of the more unique brays I have heard. This isn't his best, but it gives you an idea of what it sounds like. To me he sounds like a warrior calling out his battle cry.
The girls and their aprons are doing great. And they are working wonderfully. I caught Bob a Loo the White Silky Bantam rooster getting a quickie from Rachael, and not a mark was left on her beck! Yay for the apron.

Name the sound!

Can you guess what animal is making the sound?

The sound is coming from inside the woodpile.

Answer will be in tomorrow's blog.

Until next time...........................

What an adventure!

Whew!!! What an adventure this morning putting the aprons on the three girls! This is what Rachael's back was starting to look like thanks to amorous Stew Pot.
Hard to see Eva's back, but hers is the worst.

After corralling Eva inside the hen house, shutting the door, turning the heat lamp on low so I could see and after several failed attempts to catch her, I finally wrangled her. She was not happy! Not knowing exactly how to put the apron on I'm sure it took longer than it should have. Ever so gently I put it on, adjusted it and let her go.

Jan wasn't any easier than Eva was. But eventually on hers went too.

Rachael was the real handful. I felt so bad, but ended up catching her by grabbing her tail feathers as she darted by. She fought a whole lot more than Jan and Eva did. She even got in a couple of pecks on my hand!
Surprisingly all three took to wearing them right off. Stew Pot isn't so sure of those 'things' on their backs and has yet to get intimate with them.
Eva still doesn't want out of the coop so she is still inside wearing her apron. Rachael and Jan wanted out right now, so out they went.
For those of you who have put the aprons on your hens, how long do you keep them on? Do I need to take them off every night and 'dress' them every morning?
As I was putting the aprons on, for some reason the thought crossed my mind as to what our ancestors would say about putting clothing on our hens!

Stare down

As the babies are growing bigger by the day I have been watching to see how many roosters and how many hens there are. Well, pretty sure there is one for sure rooster out of the first three chicks that were born. What do you think? As I was leaving this morning to pick up my youngest at college I see Mr. Worm ( on the right) and Shortbus ( on the left) sitting on top of my daughters truck.
It was a definite staring contest going on. Shortbus looks away first.

Then Mr. Worm looks away.

Obviously Mr. Worm won the contest. Shortbus is leaving.

Mr. Worm giving the last 'look. He wins this round.
I was going to try the hen aprons on the girls this morning, but couldn't due to having to drive my daughter to college. Tomorrow morning for sure they are going to wear their new outfits.
Oh, it kind of snowed a bit last night and early this morning. The surrounding hills/mountains have snow on them but sadly nothing stuck on the valley floor.
Until next time..............

Catching up

Oh my gosh it has been a few days since I posted. A lot has been going on. To try to put it in a nutshell, our toilets backed up and had to call a plumber. Thank goodness it didn't cost a fortune. Turned out it was a clog in the main line going into to the septic. I ordered some hen aprons or hen saddles as some sites call them. Pretty impressed with the fabric. Appears to be a canvas which is nice and sturdy. Stew Pot is getting overly amorous with the three Americana hens. Poor Eva will not come out of the coop and now Rachael and Jan's backs are beginning to show signs of, um, too much lovin'!

Tomorrow morning the girls will get to try on their new clothes. Not going to attempt to put the aprons on in the middle of the afternoon. Going to have to wait and catch them a bit off guard in the wee hours of the morning. Should be quite a show!

On Sunday we drove up North to look at a an older truck I can use to haul hay and grain and whatever else I need. Yes, I have a truck now, but it is a newer model and to be honest I started processing the expense cost of if and when it breaks down. An older vehicle can be worked on here at home whereas a newer one has to go to the mechanic. Between paying a mechanic plus the parts, well, it is not cost effective to keep my truck any longer.

I have named the 'new' truck Monroe. He is going to work out just fine. And the best part, if something breaks down, it won't cost an arm and a leg to repair! Yay!!

Also, I have been on the search for another dog. Not a Boxer. I love the Boxer breed, but after losing Rose, well, no more Boxers. I have been to the animal shelter several times now looking for 'the one'. So far, nothing...yet. Some nice dogs have been there, but either they don't get along with cats, which is a must, or they don't get along with other dogs, another must. Several times a day I search Craigslist, but alas, nothing there either. I know in my heart when the time is right, 'the' dog will be there waiting. Somewhere, someplace, 'the' dog will be there.

The weather forecast keeps saying we are going to get snow. Um, not yet! So, if all of you who don't want the snow, please wish it here. We need it!!

Until next time...............................
