Day to day goings on here at the farm. Everything from weather to horses and donkeys to chickens to cats and dogs and everything in between. Some blogs will be informative. While others will be I hope, just entertaining and keep you coming back. And of course there will be pictures.
This morning as I was starting morning chores I stopped and started really looking at Stew Pot and the girls. It dawned on me that he really is a good looking guy surrounded by some fine looking ladies. It's funny how something is right in front of your face and you don't really 'see' it.
Just a nice pic of the 'group'.
Stew Pot, I owe you an apology. When you first came here to live with us, well, I didn't much care for you. Hence the name Stew Pot.
Now that the girls are 'big' girls now, you take really good care of them. You make sure they are safe and all in one place. Thanks big guy!
Today I thought would be a day to talk about my goats since I haven't mentioned them before. Our goats are all rescues. We have Fainting Goats. Yes, Fainting Goats. You ask if they really faint? Well, sort of. They are a breed all their own and have a genetic condition called MyotoniaCongenita. Their condition causes their muscle cells to experience prolonged contraction which causes stiffness, stop moving and even fainting. The paralysis only last a minute or so. The breed has been around since the late 1880's. And they had a purpose! Ranchers would place these goats in with their prized sheep or goats. When a predator came down, the goats would faint giving the rest of the herd to get away. Yes, they were used as a sacrifice to save the more spendy herd. This is Dick. He is between 12 and 14 years old now. Yup, he is an old man. In this pic he looks awful. His winter coat was coming off. Old Dick is still intact, but is unable to make babies. Although the old guy sure does try! When he gets scared, his back end stiffens up and he tries to hop away. Okay, I laugh when he 'faints'. Sorry.
This is Oreo. I know, a real original name! She is the sweetest of the bunch. Her age is about 8 or 9. Yes, she does the real faint. We have only seen it twice in the years we have had her, but I can tell you it was the funniest thing to see. She actually stops, drops and rolls straight onto her back with her four legs sticking straight up.
This is Baby. She does not like to be touched. Baby is about 7 years old. No, she isn't pregnant. Her mama is Gabby who is not pictured because she does not like people at all!
This is Goldie Goat. Isn't she pretty? In the winter time she grows a long curly blond coat. When she 'faints' she stiffens up where all four legs splay out and she just stands there. There have more than one occasion where she ''fainted' under a horse! Thankfully our horses stop what they are doing and wait until she moves out from under them.
If you haven't seen a Fainting Goat 'faint', go to You Tube and type in Fainting Goat. Be prepared to laugh really hard.
Today it has been raining on and off all day. Good day to do the laundry. As I walked in to my room with a basket of clothes I see this............................
The days and nights are getting alot colder now, so it was time to build a fire. But due to having to replace the seal around the stove door, this is the next best thing to actually having the real thing. This morning I was lucky and got some help packaging up some EBay items.
Squirrel is checking to make sure the printer and label is coming out right.
She knows there is another page that is suppose to come out. How nice of her to put her foot inside to make sure the page is not jammed in there.
Yup, the invoice came out great. A little crinkled, but other than that it's good to go inside the box.
Jovi decided to inspect the box to make sure it was packaged right.
It is always nice to have help when it is packaging and sending off EBay items.
Today is Veteran's Day. This morning I was looking at a picture of my Dad who served in the Armed Forces. That got me to thinking how many in my family have served, as well as how many have served in yours. To all Veteran's a BIG Thank You. The above picture shows but just a few of my family members who have served.
May everyone has has served or in the service now be safe, thought of daily and always remembered.
Thank you.
Until next time................................................
Yesterday I left everyone in their stalls/paddocks due to the rain. Usually I turn them out even if it is raining, but I noticed not a one of them was standing in their paddocks. They were all in their stalls so figured okay then, you don't want to get wet so you can stay in. When I turned everyone out this morning, yup, you guessed it, they were all full of energy. They acted like they had been in their stalls for days all cooped up. This is Patty Cake our mini mule. Here she is just looking so cute with her fuzzy winter coat.
The cuteness was over in seconds. She took off running, gaining speed with each little step.
She came running back into the front pasture, looked at me, turned around, kicked out and took off again.
Getting ready for another buck.
Patty Cake can be very sweet when SHE wants to be. And on the other hand she can be quite onery. Her antics keep me laughing.
